Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

MORE THAN JUST A DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPH, THE TOPCON OCT
WILL SCAN THE BACK OF YOUR EYE AS WELL.

Ten years ago the only practical way to examine the back of an eye was to use an ophthalmoscope and the view you got, even with an extremely good ophthalmoscope, was very limited.

In 2000 we bought our first digital Fundus Camera. With the  Fundus Camera we can take images of the back of an eye (the fundus oculi) and digitally store those images on a computer and look at them whenever we want. The advantage of a camera over an ophthalmoscope is that we can keep looking for as long as we want without dazzling the patient and we have got a permanent record to compare the fine detail with next time round. We can also see a much wider area of the back of the eye at any one time.

The Topcon OCT not only takes better, more detailed images but also takes 128 individual scans of the back of the eye.

These scans are effectively cross-sections through the retina and show up the structures of the back of the eye in incredibly fine detail. The overall thickness of the whole retina shown on the scan is just over half a millimetre.

It can then put all 128 scans together to produce a three dimensional image of the retina which allows us to see and understand much better the very fine changes which can be the indications of something going wrong.

Who is it particularly useful for?

I would encourage every patient to have regular scans, because it shows us in detail what your eye is like now and therefore it will help us to spot small but significant changes in the future. It is particularly useful for patients worried about Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, Diabetes and ‘flashes and floaters’.
